What is a Law Label?
A Law Label is a legally required tag or label on new bedding & furniture items to regulate the United States bedding, upholstery and stuffed article industries.
Laws requiring these tags were passed in the United States to inform consumers the description of the hidden filling materials, or contents, of the product - similar to food labeling. The tagging law also informs the consumer if the article and it's contents are new or used, important since used bedding may often contain lice, bedbugs and "other" things left behind.
The tagging laws are governed by the International Association of Bedding & Furniture Law Officials which is comprised of officials on a state level. Not all states enforce these tagging laws and those that do may have requirements that differ from each other. Although, a prescribed Uniform Law Label format exists enabling all states to accept a single format covering each states' requirements. Currently, only 31 states enforce the tagging laws.
Law Labels must be printed on a durable, non-tearable material, typically DuPont Tyvek®. They must be securely affixed to the product and ensure that it is visible to the customer at the point of sale.
